contact update - STOP changing history

On an EVENT lead, not a residential, where you may have multiple contacts over the course of multiple years. Why, if I update the current contact, does EVERY lead/rental for the past 3 years update to the new contact? I don't want to create a new customer for this school if my contact changes. I have different events going on with different contacts.

Can you figure out a way to NOT change every single lead that has been COMPLETED?

On the right side of the lead-above the profile there is a checkbox to create a "New Profile" That way, even if it's the same company, address, etc. it will create a profile with the new name.

It would be more helpful to have the default set as new profile with a checkbox to override previous records. Saving without checking the box causes alot more headaches in its current setup.
