Day of event contact number

I'm trying to figure out how to have a "Day of event" contact phone number on my leads. The reason being, the person who will meet us at the event site is often different from the person booking the event. This number goes out on auto emails to the customer prior to the event, and gets printed on the packing list for our delivery crew, so it needs to have a variable that can be added to different forms. Ideally, I think we would want a new field for this, which would auto fill with the customer cell phone number if we don't manually update the field.

I guess this could be added as an optional field, if some code could be added on each form (Packing list, email templates, etc) that would default to the *contact_phone* variable if this custom field were left blank? Is that a possibility? If so, what would that code look like?

Maybe I'm missing something and there is an easier way to do this?

Yes, it can be added as an optional field. When you add it, the code will be listed there next to it after you save it. It will be something like *custome-Whatever_the_field_is_called*

Still one more detail though: Can I put that variable on an email template, but use some magic (code) to tell it to use the *contact_phone* variable if this new custom field is blank?

If I could use the variable *contact_phone* as the default value for this new custom field, I think that would much more easily solve my problem. But it doesn't look like I can use variables in the optional fields.

Wait, I think it does work! It doesn't fill in the cell phone number on the lead page, but it does on the email template I tested. I think this one is solved!
